Fans of "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), "Hannibal" (2001) and "Red Dragon" (2003) are frequently surprised to discover that Sir Anthony Hopkins was not the original Doctor Hannibal Lecter!

Back in 1986, Michael Mann recruited little-known Scottish actor Brian Cox to fill the small, yet vital role in "Manhunter". Prior to Cox accepting the role, the likes of Gene Hackman ("The French Connection") and Brian Dennehy ("First Blood", "Presumed Innocent") had also been considered. However, against the apparent wishes of Manhunter producer Dino De Laurentiis, Cox was always Mann's preferred choice as Lecter (spelt as "Lecktor" on the Manhunter credits)

Trivia fans might be interested to learn that Brian Cox is the father of Alan Cox, whose brief career in Hollywood began (and ended..) with the underrated Spielberg produced gem "Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear" (UK Title: "Pyramid of Fear") The film was released in 1985, so it is likely that Cox Jnr. was cutting his teeth in Hollywood as Dr. Watson at the same time as his father was doing the same thing as Dr. Lecter!

Sadly, both films were major box office disasters in the USA, with Manhunter earning under $9,000,000* and Young Sherlock Holmes bringing in just over twice that amount* (despite having, one suspects, a rather large budget)
