Introduction..
Italian Cinematographer Dante Spinotti has worked with
Director Michael
Mann on a number of his movies. Here's the complete
list (to date)
- "Manhunter" (1986)
- "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992)
- "Heat" (1995)
- "The Insider" (1999)
It came as something of a surprise then, that Dante did not work
with Mann on his biopic - "Ali" (2002) He opted instead
to work with Oscar winning Italian director Roberto Benigni
on his project "Pinnochio" (2002)
Despite the similarities in visual style (particularly
during the opening sequence), Dante did not work with Michael
Mann on his 1983 flop "The Keep". In that instance, the
Director of Photography was Alex Thompson - who in another
movie connection worked for producer Dino De Laurentiis
on the box office failure "Year of the Dragon". Rumour has
it that Spinotti applied some of Thomson's visual ideas
used in that movie to his "palette" for Manhunter in 1986. "Déjà vu"
In a strange turn of events, Mr. Spinotti ended up working
on Brett
Ratner's high-profile "remake" of Manhunter - "Red Dragon" (2002) ! He previously
worked with Ratner on his hit movie "The Family Man" (starring Nicolas Cage and Téa
Leoni) As a part of the special features content on the Anchor Bay Manhunter
DVD releases, Dante Spinotti has been involved in a specially
commissioned featurette called "The Manhunter Look". This
short, but fascinating mini documentary is also included on
the excellent Region 2 DVD release from Momentum.
