Dino De Laurentiis ...

Veteran Hollywood Producer, but not a fan of "Manhunter" !

Hollywood stalwart and Manhunter Producer Dino De Laurentiis also produced the third Lecter movie - "Hannibal" and also another classic favourite of mine from the 1980's - "Flash Gordon"

After the well documented (not to mention baffling...) box-office failure of "Manhunter" at the USA box office in 1986, Dino famously passed on any involvement with the making of the sequel to Red Dragon - "The Silence Of The Lambs" into a movie. Big mistake.

Crucially though, De Laurentiis wisely decided to hold on to the rights to have first refusal on turning any future Lecter novels by Thomas Harris into movies ...

After the massive success of The Silence of the Lambs in cinemas around the world, not to mention Oscar glory, it was not at all surprising when De Laurentis decided to develop the movie adaptation of "Hannibal".

The third Lecter film was of course directed by Ridley Scott (who was on red-hot form after the success of "Gladiator") and was eventually released worldwide on Valentine's Day in 2001.

Another Bite ?

De Laurentiis has not finished with Dr. Lecter yet though - rumour has it that there are plans for a big budget remake of the Red Dragon / Manhunter story, which could well be released sometime in late 2002 ... [update: of course these rumours did turn out to be grounded and the result is Brett Ratner's "Red Dragon"]
