A Film of Beauty..

These photos are just some examples of the beautiful and unique cinematography to be found in Manhunter. We have Director of Photography Dante Spinotti and Michael Mann to thank for the "look" of the film. Despite being filmed during the mid-1980's, the film still looks slick and stylish today (give or take a couple of dodgy pastel-coloured suits!)

The filmmakers collaborated again to great effect on "The Last of The Mohicans" (1992), "Heat" (1995) and also "The Insider" (1999). In a bizarre twist, Dante went on to be Cinematographer on the effective "remake" of Manhunter - Brett Ratner's "Red Dragon" (2002).

An Influential Aesthetic?

Although he personally denied it when asked directly by manhunter.net (on an Email), I remain convinced that Director Mark Romanek was to some extent inspired by Manhunter's unique visual style, when making his impressive thriller "One Hour Photo" (2002). The film has other parallels with Manhunter and is, incidentally, well worth a look if you have not yet seen it. Prior to filming One Hour Photo, Romanek was best known for his work on music videos, with his most famous being the award-winning video for "Hurt" (the Nine Inch Nails cover, performed by the late Johnny Cash)

Do not adjust your set..

As one of the original pages of manhunter.net, an expanded version of this page is a little overdue! (the site launched in 1998..) With this in mind, I have purchased the Special Edition of Manhunter (region 2) and also the superb PC DVD playback software PowerDVD. More stunning stills are being grabbed from the DVD and have started appearing here throughout the spring of 2007 - and beyond..
