In case you have been in a cave for the past
year (too bad - you missed the Millennium celebrations!), HANNIBAL is
the best selling new Hannibal
Lector novel from Thomas Harris.
Due to the controversial (and
to date widely rubbished) ending to the new book, which I
am not going to disclose here (!), Jodie
Foster declined the no doubt lucrative
opportunity to reprise her Oscar winning role of Clarance
Starling. Initially, the same situation applied for Sir Anthony Hopkins, although
latest (Jan. 2000) rumours seem to indicate that Hopkins has
finally agreed to come back for one more thrash as Lector.
The only current certainty
about the Hannibal movie project however, is that Ridley
Scott (Bladerunner, Thelma & Louise, GI Jane) will
be directing the film. Silence
of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme was
originally approached, but he apparently rejected the chance
to direct the sequel as he was unhappy with the levels of
extreme violence and brutality found in the new story.
