"The
Keep" / "La Forteresse Noire" (French
Title)
The
Keep (1983) is perhaps Michael
Mann's most "interesting" film
project :-/ If you know little or nothing about this
bizarre 1983 Horror film, the best places to start
are by reading F.
Paul Wilson's original novel and also checking out Stéphane
Piter's superb
fan site |
With the exception of his 1979 TV movie debut
"The Jericho Mile", "The Keep" is the only Michael
Mann movie that has yet to be released on DVD (blame Paramount
Pictures!) If you are looking for the definitive version,
you need to obtain the Letterboxed ntsc Laserdisc edition.
Tangerine Dream's contribution.. One of the strongest aspects of this undeniably "odd" film
is the fantastic soundtrack score composed by German instrumental
legends Tangerine Dream |

As with
many of their
soundtrack releases, the music fits the
images on the screen superbly. Sadly though, after working
with Mann on Thief and The Keep to such good effect, this
turned out to be the final collaboration.
Unlike Manhunter,
"The Keep" soundtrack has been fortunate enough to be
granted an official release on compact disc. However,
this release came from Tangerine Dream themselves (and
their "Tdi music" label) and was produced in very limited
quantities! The original issue in 1997 was restricted
to 150 copies - and even a follow-up (repackaged but
otherwise identical) release in 2000 had a run of just 300! This
makes the album one of the most sought after releases
from the band. If you see a genuine Tdi
music release available anywhere grab it with
both hands - and don't let go!
Finders Keepers ..
The Keep has been long out of print on Pal
video in England, but an american
ntsc edition is still
obtainable. In England an official but limited
re-issue of 3000 copies from the High Street retailer Hmv surfaced
in 2000 (the actual release date was the 13th November
2000).
The Hmv
edition utilised the original
poster artwork and the picture quality was
good. However, the screen ratio was sadly Pan and Scan
4:3. As any fan of the film will tell you, to see The
Keep at anywhere near it's best it must be
experienced in glorious w i d e s c r e e n ! It was
therefore great for Hmv to listen to their customers
and re-release the film, but ultimately a missed opportunity..
