"An engine designed for one
purpose - to make the pulse pound, the heart palpitate, the
fear glands secrete ..."
The New York Times |
There's still time
to read the book
When Red Dragon, the movie, is released
in October of 2002, each and every review of the film is certain
to discuss two main comparisons: 1) How similar/different Brett
Ratner's interpretation is to Michael Mann's Manhunter, and 2) How
similar/different it is to Thomas Harris' original novel from 1981.
Having read the book on numerous occasions
and also having seen Manhunter far too many times, I'll
certainly be extremely interested to see how Red Dragon turns out.
Ratner has promised that his film will
be far closer to the book than Manhunter (an ambitious claim) and
producer Dino De Laurentis
has had his say too, stating many times that "Manhunter was
not Red Dragon" (a crazy claim!) |

Finding
the "Real" Red Dragon
"The best popular novel published
since The Godfather ..."
Stephen King, on
Red Dragon. |
The only way to be absolutely certain
about which movie eventually offers the closest adaptation, is to
read Thomas Harris' original novel. The book is a fantastic read
and offers some interesting extra characters and sub-plots which
Michael Mann decided to leave
un-filmed for Manhunter. Furthermore, I am certain that "Red
Dragon" remains Harris' finest novel to date and it's sequels
"The Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal" both
failed to eclipse the raw power of his first Lecter novel.
So, if you have yet to read "Red
Dragon" then (in the words of Martin Scorcese in "Mean
Streets") - now
is the time!
