The film music of Tangerine Dream..
Having worked successfully with Michael Mann on both "Thief" (1981) and "The Keep" (1983) it is perhaps surprising that German prog-rock legends Tangerine Dream did not contribute to the soundtrack album for Manhunter (for the record, Klaus Schulze - a founding member of the band - does feature on the soundtrack ("Freeze") - but by 1986 Schulze had, I believe already left Tangerine Dream..) I also find it strange that, given the unprecedented success of the "Miami Vice" soundtrack albums, Jan Hammer's name was also not invited to contribute towards the album. I do however have a personal theory that Mann actually did ask Jan Hammer to compose the main theme for Manhunter, only for it to be rejected during the editing / mixing stages (the evidence for this being the presence of a track called "Red Dragon" on Jan's album "SnapShots 1.2" [track 8]) The Keep.. There have been 2 "official" releases for TD's music for "The Keep" - and both have come directly from the band, via their popular (and highly collectable) "TDI" label. The first Keep release is rumoured to have been limited to only 150 copies, whereas the 2nd edition was a batch of 300. Such limited numbers have secured The Keep's status as being one of, if not the most difficult CD to obtain from the band. Recommended Tangerine Dream CDs..
