The Double Disc Region One USA edition: [deleted]

In February 2001, Anchorbay Entertainment released not one but 2 editions of Manhunter on DVD in the United States of America. The standard edition featured the original theatrical cut of the film, whilst the limited (100,000 pieces only) 2-disc edition also included the elusive 'Director's' or 'TV' cut of the film on a second disc !

Also included was a rather cool 'case file' booklet, which included dozens of rare publicity photographs, poster artwork and much more. The overall presentation of the double-disc edition is of a very high standard.

The Single Disc Region 1 USA edition:

Both discs contain a host of quality extras and are highly recommended, but beware that the picture quality of the Director's Cut on disc 2 is very poor indeed. Don't let that put you off though - the picture quality on disc one for the theatrical cut is fantastic.

  The Double DVD edition is now sadly Out Of Print (OOP) However, there are many new, sealed editions still in circulation! The best place to locate it these days is on eBay.

The 2001 double disc Region 2 UK edition:

Later in 2001, Momentum Pictures released an all-new UK Region 2 DVD release of the film. This was excellent news for all UK based fans of the film because the Momentum release managed to match the quality of the USA Anchor Bay product and in some respects it even surpassed it.

The bonus book: [deleted]

The package features a selection of extra features and also a specially written book by Stephen Paul Davies called "Manhunter : Michael Mann's Head Games" - the artwork for which is shown to the left of this text.

** 18th July 2002 update **
Note that not all copies of the Momentum DVD include the bonus book. There is some confusion regarding it's long term inclusion, but it is possible that the book was a limited edition for initial editions only. Significantly, there has never been a reference to the book on the printed DVD sleeve. When the DVD was first released, there was a sticker referring to the book on the cover. Check with your retailer before purchasing, as there may still be some copies which include the book available ...

The original bmg region 2 release: [deleted]

Manhunter was first available on DVD in the UK. In 1999, BMG interactive released a welcomed, but ultimately very disappointing Region 2 edition of the film. This was a suprise because their previous widescreen VHS release of the film was excellent. However, despite being presented in the essential widescreen ratio, the BMG DVD product was justly criticised for a poor quality picture transfer and sound mix.

Furthermore, as was common with most UK DVD's at the time, the so-called 'Special Features' turned out to be just a few static pages about Thomas Harris.

A Manhunter DVD was also released in France soon after, only under the original French title for the film - "Le Sixiemé Sens" ("The Sixth Sense"! )

Note: This edition was thankfully deleted in 2000 and is no longer available.

Note: Despite the poor picture and sound quality of this release, it is worth noting that at the time of writing, this is the *only* DVD release of Manhunter to contain the version which most people consider to be the true "Theatrical Cut" of the movie. For example, the BMG "cut" contains the famous line "... someone should blow the sick fuck out of his socks ..." Unbelievably, this line of dialogue is not present even on the Anchor Bay edition ! If you are looking for this OOP edition, the best place to locate it is always on eBay.
